According to internetworldstats.com there are 238,015,529 internet users in North America, 71.1 % of total population.

According to ComScore(internet analysis firm) Americans conducted 9.6 billion searches in December 2007 via 4 major search engines: Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask. That's 40 searches per each internet user, in December 2007 alone.

Why Do Marketing Firms Underestimate the Power of SEO?

  • How many of 238,015,529 Americans internet users could be your customers?
  • How many looked on Google for your type of products and services?
  • How many new customers could you get as result of being on the first page? 10 per day? 95 per month?

Those are the questions that you must ask. As more and more we move towards digitized society, the greater the need for professional search engine optimization.

Myth: public relation companies and traditional marketing firms can deliver good results on the internet. The reality of the matter is that old style PR firms are accustomed to push marketing – pushing the message at prospects. This is not the way internet functions.

Internet has a society of its own, its own psychology and its own rules.

Whats Going On?

If we rewind back to the times of industrial revolution, we will easily draw parallels with what is going on with the media today. Let me explain.

When electricity was invented, it took more then 50 years for it to be adopted, even though it was more reliable, more effective and efficient than steam power. Giants who relied on coal largely underestimated and disregarded it, due to the frightening costs associated with changes and due to the big ego, of being invincible.

At the time, smaller companies and start ups detected an immense advantage of using electricity over coal and went for it. As the inevitable changes took place, giants who were slow to change either disappeared from the scene or were forced to change to electricity, while smaller, more adaptable companies became leaders.

This is the trend we're seeing right now in marketing. As majority of people now have access to the internet(on the west), they rather do their own research and find businesses themselves.

Using search engines is convenient. Any information is at the fingertips. Any company and any business can be found.

People are not rushed or pushed and appreciate it. They make decisions at their own pace, based on information given to them by your company.

Businesses that show up among top results are regarded by many is industry leaders, regardless of offline presence.

Newspapers Migrating Online

read previous part…

Around 90% of all printed publications are now available online at no charge, leveraging revenues from online advertising dollars. Instead of charging people for subscriptions and delivering classifieds, newspapers deliver free articles and simply serve advertisements along side. Newspapers are loosing readership in their traditional form, but they're adjusting to new wave of media. CEOs and marketers of printed mediums recognized the importance of being available online, as a long term strategy for keeping their businesses profitable.

Advertisements delivered in original format(printed) are largely loosing their effectiveness, as less people are reading them. Though readers still use newspapers to look for local businesses, Google and Yahoo outweigh them, simply because they are more convenient and offer more targeted choices. Instead of skimming through newspaper pages, people simply enter their keywords into search engines and results pop up in an instant.

The trend is being largely detected by execs and by marketers. According to "Business Week" over 80% of advertisers will reduce their TV ad dollars:

Business Week(reference below):
"A new survey done by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and Forrester Research, Inc. found that 78% of marketers feel that traditional TV advertising has become less effective in the past two years."

"Eighty percent of advertisers will spend more of their advertising budget on Web advertising and 68% of advertisers will look to search engine marketing."

Analysis of Newspapers, TV, Radio and low margins of ROI for Small Businesses.

It's quite obvious that TV had experienced some of the highest declines in its history. Teenage viewership has gradually evaporated due more interactive and more engaging online environment. Apart from that, TV was immensely clustered into niche audiences, such as: Fish network, Fight Network, Golf Channel, Movie Network, Home & Garden TV, etc..

In order to keep viewers, network broadcasters were forced to expand their offerings, since prime time wasn't enough to keep good viewer base for advertising dollars. The result is 100+ cable channels of all stripes and colours.

With this variety advertisements must've gotten more effective? After all, viewers are somewhat targeted by their interest.

Not exactly. With variety comes choice and that choice is extensively used during commercial breaks. Instead of watching advertisements, people simply change the channel until commercial break is over.

It is correct to say that not everyone changes the channel, but those who stick usually tune out of the TV, multitask, talk to friend or do some other activities. What do you do during commercials? As a result, advertisers do not get the return on investment they used to for their dollars. For you as a decision maker, it may be even out of reach, however, you will see that this method has found a formidable, more effective rival.

This continues well into other mediums, such as Radio, Newspapers and Magazines.

Radio uses interruption advertising, similar to that of TV. The impact is quite similar to television. People simply tune out to a different station or do not pay attention. It is also important to note that radio is primarily listened in cars.

But this advertising channel also lost its effectiveness. Majority of modern cars have CD players, which erode audience even more. Why listen to commercials when you can listen to your favourite artist? Why be interrupted by another offer?

As a result, dollars spent advertising on radio and TV are somewhat talking to deaf ears.

Though prices vary greatly between TV and Radio their effects are loosing ground due to the overwhelming number of commercial messages. People have got accustomed to advertisements and do not pay attention to them anymore. They know perfectly that commercial breaks are all about selling them something, regardless of packaging.

We should also mention the print media such as newspapers and magazines. Here we see a different pattern. Continue reading

People Do Not Like to Be Sold

Search Engine Marketing and Traditional Media

One fact remains true, more and more each day. People do not like to be sold and have developed filters against commercials.

Nearly 70 years, Newspapers, TV and Radio have dominated advertising realm. The tactic is honed, practiced and perfected. Shoot at crowds and try to capture those who might be interested. It's been the only way to let the world know about your business. Blasting through people who are in many cases – not interested. It works, but…

It has reached the climax.

5 Minute commercial breaks on TV and radio. 2 page adverts in newspapers. Magazine pages stuffed with nothing but advertisements. Fake Editorial Reviews. Billboards size of buildings. Commercial messages on products people buy, asking to buy more. Direct mail. Telemarketing, email spam and on it goes…..

People aren't receptive anymore. They do not want to hear another pitch or another advert.

If you come from marketing and genuinely believe that traditional marketing is simply letting people know about the product, we won't argue with you. However, if observed carefully this is the picture that unveils all around us. According to Forrester Research average consumers are targeted with more than 3000+ ads per day. Little attention span and general disinterest is quite natural.

If too many people use something that works, it looses it's value and effectiveness. This is what we're observing right now. TV, newspapers, magazines, billboards, direct mail are loosing value at high speed. People are too accustomed to being sold and close themselves to it.

As its effectiveness goes down, so does the value of your hard earned invested money.

If you're interested finding out more about effectiveness of search engine marketing how it can increase your profits far more effectively than traditional media please read further.
